When the Derek Sparks saga ended and the dust settled, Derek accomplished what 99.9 percent of young athletes do not have the energy, courage, or self esteem to even attempt. Instead of allowing bitterness to engulf him, he brushed himself off and emerged a wise man. Derek learned to trust himself, channeling his intensity and competitive spirit in an effort to change himself and to secure his future. In spite of the years of manipulation by others, Derek took control of his own destiny.

In his book, Derek reveals a corrupt system that often destroys the very talent it initially hopes to cultivate. The fact that someone could survive such a system is remarkable. Derek’s tale is amazing in that he can be credited with so much more than simple survival: He became more than a top-notch athlete, he became a stellar human being.

At one time, controversy and scandal were part and parcel of the incredible task of being Derek Sparks, a celebrated high school All-American Football Phenom. Touted as one of the greatest high school running backs to ever play the game, Derek came into his own as a man when he stopped carrying the football. Ironically it was his promising football career that he had to overcome. Today, Derek spreads his message to parents and young athletes, educating them about the realities of interscholastic sports.

For those of us lucky enough to know Derek, we are not surprised by his tenacity and determination. When I hear Derek speak with such passion about his past and see the fire that burns in his eyes; I understand the natural emergence of Derek Sparks.
